STORM CENTER: Geocaching a new activity

Last week, the sports editor of The Bowie News posed a question on our Facebook page.
I asked if any of our Facebook fans were involved in an activity called geocaching, which is the official outdoor activity of the month of September for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
The post reached 1,137 people, received 11 likes and 21 responses, which included a couple from me.
“I really enjoy geocaching with the family,” said Bob Powell, a respondent who lives in nearby Sunset. “I really like the ones off the beaten path. We have found several in the state parks that you have to hike to. It’s a great pastime and gets you outside.”
“I absolutely love geocaching,” said Deann Powell. “It’s so much fun and educational.”
Tiffany Leake, another respondent, agrees that geocaching is a fun activity and she hopes my column will generate more support for the hobby.
So, what exactly is geocaching then?
According to the TPWD website, geocaching is the hunt for more than two million geocaches worldwide. They are hidden by people like us. Read more of this column in the weekend edition of The Bowie News.
Editor’s Note: The Storm Center column is the expressed written views of sports editor Eric Viccaro and not The Bowie News.
Here are a couple of examples of a geocaching cannister. Sometimes the cannisters are plastic like these, others can be metal, such as coffee cans and old-fashioned lunch boxes. (Courtesy photo from Friends of Channel Coast State Parks, Ventura, Calif.)
