The accident occurred at 3:28 a.m. on Sept. 25 at the service road of U.S. 287 Southbound overpass. Bowie Police Officer C.R. Pelton investigated the accident.

Jautaunne Powell, 26, was driving the Escape, which was reportedly owned by a Garland man. Police report they have been unable to contact family members to obtain further information on where the two women are from or their medical condition.

The accident report states the vehicle was traveling southbound in the northbound traffic lanes on U.S. Hwy. 287 when it left the roadway and went into the median.

The vehicle went airborne according to witnesses going between the overpasses and plunged 151 feet to the paved service road below.

Pelton states the front end of the vehicle struck the pavement and then flipped in the air landing on its roof on a drainage ditch embankment, sliding to a stop just out of the ditch. Distance from the first impact to stop was approximately 75 feet said Pelton.

Powell was airlifted from the scene to John Peter Smith Hospital, where she was last reported to be in serious, but stable condition in the intensive care unit.

Her passenger, Samantha McDonald, 26, was airlifted to United Regional Hospital, but there is no information on her condition stated police.
