HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Roundball redux
By ERIC VICCARO

Local high school gymnasiums featured the sounds of squeaky sneakers and leather crashing on hardwood this past week.
Yes, basketball practice has arrived on the athletic calendar in Montague and eastern Clay Counties.
The first allowable basketball practice date set by the University Interscholastic League – the state’s governing body – was Oct. 22 for girls and Oct. 29 for boys.
“Since we don’t have football, we were chomping at the bit to start basketball,” said Prairie Valley head coach Jack Williams, now in his second year with the Bulldogs.
Williams said the kids were ready to go.
The players also have used the athletic period as means to get better, but now the Bulldogs and everyone else will have more time on their side.
Williams is excited to have more depth this season with 12 boys out – spearheaded by three seniors in center/forward Mitchell Eldred, forward Angelo Gomez and guard Matt Suarez.
Prairie Valley will scrimmage the Red River Rattlers on Nov. 11, and begin the season on Nov. 18 against Wichita Christian.
Most all the coaches said the most paramount activity during the first week is conditioning, getting players back in basketball shape.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys
New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

Botard new BHS girls BB coach
After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.
Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.
“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”
Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
