Voter turnout tops 11.94% in county

There was an 11.94 percent turnout in Tuesday’s party primary election runoffs in Montague County.
Elections Administrator Ginger Wall reported 1,579 of the county’s 13,226 registered voters cast ballots Tuesday.
There were only two county race runoffs on the Republican ticket and one state-wide race on the Democratic ticket.
Assistant County Treasurer LaVonda Langford won a close race for county treasurer with 53.31 percent or 790 votes defeating Brandi Shipman, former elections administrator who had 692 votes or 46.69 percent.
Langford has been assistant treasurer since March 2013. The position came open when Treasurer Linda McGaughey opted to retire this year. There are no Democratic party challengers on the November election.
Retired law officer Kevin Benton defeated two-term justice of the peace two Karen Reynolds, 545 to 266 votes. He earned 67.20 percent of the vote over Reynolds’ 32.80 percent.
In the only Democratic state runoff, Lupe Valdez won 31 votes in the county, just one more than Andrew White’s 30 votes. Valdez, former chief of the Dallas Police Department, went on to defeat White statewide with 52.7 percent of the vote. She will face off against Republican Gov. Greg Abbott in November.

Jury finds ex-DA Casey Hall guilty on theft by a public servant

The jury was seated on Monday and the opening day of testimony Tuesday only lasted four hours, before the panel went into deliberations about 2 p.m.
Two hours later the jury returned a guilty verdict on both charges. Wednesday morning the jury was set to begin discussion on Hall’s punishment at 8:30 a.m. with both sides offering evidence and testimony. Hall faces up to 10 years in prison.
The trial was moved to Denton County on a change of venue requested by Hall in March. After 16th District Judge Sherry Shipman read the verdict, it was reported Hall hung her head in disappointment and was later seen crying and emotional as she left the courtroom.
