Bowie opens district play with win at City View

Published

on

The Bowie Jackrabbits kicked off district play Friday night at City View shorthanded, with both of the team’s leading scorers out with ankle injuries.
Despite this, the Jackrabbits had players step up as they won 64-56 in a game that was not as close as the final score alludes.
Even without Daniel Mosley, Bowie still outsized the Mustangs. What City View lacked in size they made up for with athleticism they used to get up and down the floor in transition and press the Jackrabbits all game.
The first quarter was a high scoring affair as both teams traded three-pointers back and forth like it was no big deal. For Bowie, it was a good sign considering the game before at Muenster, they made only one three-pointer in 22 attempts. The Mustangs hung with the Jackrabbits as Bowie led 20-17 heading into the second quarter.
Whether due to a change in defense or some other factor, City View started to try and attack the rim with limited success against the Jackrabbits’ size. Bowie’s three-point barrage slowed down a tick, but not its scoring as the small lead grew into a 39-26 lead at halftime.
The Mustangs were able to gather several offensive rebounds, attacking the Jackrabbits major weakness this season. In the third quarter, Coach Jonathon Horton had had enough and called a time out where he implored his team to rebound better.
The team responded a bit, with bench player Boo Oakley taking it to heart as he gathered 10 rebounds in his 16 minutes of playing time for the game to lead the team.
Bowie’s lead did not get much bigger, but they still led by double digits 50-36 heading into the fourth quarter.
The lead still was at 14 points when the Jackrabbits put in its bench players to close the game with 1:43 left and the score 62-48. City View did not give up as their press and effort along with a couple of three-pointers allowed them to cut the lead to 62-54 in less than a minute. Horton was forced to put back in some starters to make sure the game would not get any closer as Bowie held on to win 64-56.
