The Bowie High School boys’ basketball team ushered in the new season on Monday at the dazzling American Airlines Center in Dallas.
The Jackrabbits had to adjust to the big stage as the Bobcats tallied the first nine points of the game.
But, once Bowie made those adjustments, the team had the lead for most of the second half en route to a 59-56 victory.
“We played a lot of kids,” Bowie head coach Doug Boxell said. “We played a lot of different combinations and groups. I was satisfied to get a win.”
For Boxell, it was all about finding the right combination of players to get a victory, and the Jackrabbits secured this win.
Bowie earned it by converting on 17-of-24 free-throw attempts (71 percent) and by grabbing 12 offensive rebounds. That’s what wins games like this one.
Boxell said there were other keys to victory.
“Our man defense hurt them more than anything else,” he said. “As the game went along, we were able to get more turnovers with it. I thought the kids played hard.”
Chase Hall and Jeffery Howard tied for the team lead with 12 points. Hall also snared 10 rebounds for a double-double.
Krum netted the game’s first nine points, and Bowie clawed back to within five points by the end of one quarter, 17-12. Read more, and see the complete box score in the mid-week Bowie News.

Published

on

New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.

“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”

McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.

McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.
