New play explores life of Amon G. Carter

Dave Lieber, “The Watchdog” columnist at The Dallas Morning News, wrote a one-man play honoring one of the giants of Texas journalism.
“The point is to remind everyone about the glorious past of U.S. newspapers and how they make our society a better place,” Lieber says.
Lieber’s play about the late Amon G. Carter Sr. will be performed 11 times in May at Artisan Center Theater in Hurst, Texas.
“AMON! The Ultimate Texan” focuses on the many ways Carter used his newspaper, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, which he ran for 50 years, to influence the state of Texas and beyond.
“Carter was the most brilliant marketer of his era,” Lieber says. He courted U.S. presidents and celebrities and leveraged his power over readers and politicians. He preached the spirit of giving and led crusades to build roads, hospitals, colleges, state parks and much more.
“As a one-person economic development department for his city, he lured a trillion dollars’ worth of business to his city, including American Airlines, Lockheed Martin, Bell Helicopter and many, many more. They couldn’t say no to him.” Read the full story in the weekend News.
