OUTDOORS: Visit Texas state parks to enjoy Christmas-themed events

Would you like to get away from the rush of the holiday season?
Go to a Texas state park and enjoy holiday-themed program.
There will be more than 50 holiday-themed events at more than 40 state parks across Texas from Dec. 1 until after Christmas.
A new brochure is available at all state parks and Texas Travel Information Centers with details of each event.
The 12-page booklet includes images of past events and a map of all parks offering holiday happenings.
The brochure is also available online at www.texasstateparks.org/holiday.

Christmas events are coming

There will be two Christmas-themed events in the region on Dec. 13 – Christmas in the Valley at Dinosaur Valley State Park in Glen Rose.
People will have the opportunity to decorate their own campsite for Christmas.
The entry fee for Dinosaur Valley State Park is $7 for adults and free for youth 12 years of age and under.

There will also be a “Ghosts of Christmas Past” event at the Fort Richardson State Park & Historic Site in Jacksboro from 5-6:30 p.m. on Dec. 13.
Enjoy old-time refreshments and observe “ghosts” of cavalry soldiers and their families as they celebrate Christmas at an 1870s U.S. military post.
The public may also stroll through the historic buildings, with candlelight in hand.
The entrance fee is $3 for adults and free for youth 12 years of age and under.

Buy an ornament

Texas state park ornaments are available through the TPWD, featuring some of the most recognizable landscapes in the park system.
Ornaments are $8.95 each or $19.95 for the set of five. If you purchase a Texas state gift card valued at $75 or more, the consumers receives an ornament for free.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys

New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.

“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”

McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.

McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

Botard new BHS girls BB coach

After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.

Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.

“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”

Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
