District 68 State House Representative Drew Springer gave his Montague County constituents an update on the recent legislative session during a pair of town hall meetings Thursday.
In Bowie about 18 citizens attended. Springer called it a “good session,” where they were able to prepare a conservative budget that covered a lot of areas.
Some of the supplemental areas the budget addressed included Hurricane Harvey relief, retired teachers will receive a 13th month check at $2,000 and money also was put into the retirement fund to make it actuarial sound. Springer said $250 million was put into a fund for county roads to help repair damage from energy production. He anticipates the majority of that will go into West Texas where drilling remains very active, but all counties should receive some funds.
The legislature funded $17 million to create a veterinary school at Texas Tech University and expanded Medicaid rural hospital reimbursement. Springer said rural hospitals continue to struggle and pointed to Chillicothe hospital which closed recently.
