Nocona once again brought its own unique twist to Mardi Gras with its 10th annual festival this past weekend.
Hosted by the Nocona Chamber of Commerce and other community organizations, the festival offers three days of parades and family fun.
Thursday opened with Krewe de Barkus, the dog parade. Those winners were featured in the weekend Bowie News. On Friday the ATV parade rolled through town.
Saturday opened with the Mardi Gras 5K-10K presented by the Nocona Band Boosters. See results in today’s sports.
The Shoebox Parade was a new event where children were invited to create a small float entry that was mobile. There were 21 who marched around in the H.J. Justin Community Center.
The following youngsters were winners: Ages 4-6, Willow Noreen, first and Tatum Nell, second; ages 7-9, Liberty Nell, first and Josie Parr, second and ages 10-12, Anthony Burrows, first and Zane Luedeck, second. The Krewe De Kiddos followed with the big parade climax at 3 p.m.
Everyone clamored to catch colorful Mardi Gras beads thrown from the floats. First place went to Nocona Feed & Ranch Supply, with their haybale tractor. Second was Guardian Hospice, Sherman (small car with a lady wearing large butterfly wings) and third the Maskat Shrine Clowns from Wichita Falls. See more photos from the festivities in your mid-week Bowie News.

The 22nd annual July Jam returns on July 27 to the Bowie Community Center West Hall, 413 Pelham Street in Bowie.
There will be a “chickin’ pickin’ fiddling fun time” as guests will be entertained by amazing fiddling tunes and enjoying a chicken meal with delicious homemade jams because it wouldn’t be July Jam without it.
Tickets are just $15 with the event starting at 6 p.m. The funds raised help provide awards for the Championship Fiddler Competition during Chicken and Bread Days Heritage Festival on Oct. 5.
This attracts talented musicians from all over to visit downtown Bowie to test their fiddling skills on stage in the Bowie Fire Hall on Oct. 5.
Along with the live fiddling entertainment, come hungry and be ready to outbid your neighbors at the silent auction or just stop by for a great meal, fellowship and soak in the air conditioning.
