What is Leap Day? Why do we have it?

Published

Why do we have leap years?
According to AccuWeather, every four years an extra day, called a leap day, is added to the end of February. Feb. 29, doesn’t “exist” except for during a leap year, but why does this happen?
We use the sun to determine the seasons. One Earth rotation around the sun actually takes 365 days, five hours, 48 minutes and 45 seconds, not a flat 365 days. Philosophers have rounded this to a quarter of a day.
Every four years an extra day is added, making leap years have 366 days. This is because four years of an extra quarter day adds up to one full day.
People born on Feb. 29 are called
“leaplings” or “leapers.” The odds of being born on a leap day are 1 in 1,500.
Astrologers believe people born on Feb. 29 have unusual talents, such as the ability to burp the alphabet or paint like Picasso.

July Jam planned for July 27

Published

on

The 22nd annual July Jam returns on July 27 to the Bowie Community Center West Hall, 413 Pelham Street in Bowie.
There will be a “chickin’ pickin’ fiddling fun time” as guests will be entertained by amazing fiddling tunes and enjoying a chicken meal with delicious homemade jams because it wouldn’t be July Jam without it.
Tickets are just $15 with the event starting at 6 p.m. The funds raised help provide awards for the Championship Fiddler Competition during Chicken and Bread Days Heritage Festival on Oct. 5.
This attracts talented musicians from all over to visit downtown Bowie to test their fiddling skills on stage in the Bowie Fire Hall on Oct. 5.
Along with the live fiddling entertainment, come hungry and be ready to outbid your neighbors at the silent auction or just stop by for a great meal, fellowship and soak in the air conditioning.
