HIGH SCHOOL BOYS BASKETBALL: Sandusky records rare double-double in victory

Forestburg High School’s Skyler Sandusky had been ill recently, missing much practice time.
But, that really didn’t matter on Monday night in the Longhorns’ District 1A-21 opener as Forestburg defeated Midway 48-26.
See, Sandusky produced a rare double-double with 16 points to go with an eye-popping 12 blocked shots. He also corralled seven rebounds to tie J.D. Moore for top honors in that statistical category.
Forestburg improved to 8-6 overall, 1-0 1A-21. The Longhorns’ schedule is quirky as they go back to non-district action on Jan. 3 at Sacred Heart in Muenster.
“We wanted to make a statement to start district,” Forestburg co-head coach Steve Sandusky said. “The first half, we played and looked like a team that hadn’t played in nine days, which is what we were.”
Forestburg hadn’t played since the Chico Tournament Dec. 11-13.
“We came out and played much better in the second half,” Sandusky stated. “We did not shoot well, but our defense picked up the slack.”
For sure, Forestburg won this game with defense. Aside from all the shots the Longhorns either blocked or altered, J.D. Moore swiped three steals and Taten Vann two. The team also excelled in keeping Midway off the glass with successful defensive rebounding.

Published

New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.

“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”

McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.

McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.
