Saint Jo has a busy week ahead

Published

The Saint Jo Panther boy’s program has a busy week ahead.
Not only does the baseball team play arch nemesis Dodd City in the area playoffs, but the track team is sending four members to compete in the state meet this weekend. Dodd City is in the same boat which is why the series is scheduled for the days before.
Game one is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on May 12 at Bells High School. Game two will start 30 minutes after the end of game one. If game three is needed, it is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on May 13.
The state track meet 1A running events are scheduled to start at 5 p.m. on March 14 at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin.
The Panthers’ baseball program does not have a lot of history behind it. While there is talk there was a team sometime in the 1980s, it was not until the last seven years or so Saint Jo has fielded a consistent team.
After a few false starts and a year taken off, the program has been fielding a team every year since 2017. The first year the team predictably struggled, winning one game and losing to Vernon Northside in the playoffs.
The next year started the program’s slide as being one of the steadiest 1A programs in the area, routinely giving some 2A teams a run for their money. It also was the farthest playoff push as the Panthers beat Northside this time along with Savoy.
It was then Saint Jo first played Dodd City. The Hornets won that series and have every year since in the playoffs against the Panthers minus the 2020 year due to COVID-19.
By now, it is a cliché that every sport at Saint Jo needs to break through and beat Dodd City in the playoffs at some point to take the next step. The volleyball team did in 2017 to start their four year stretch of making it deep in the playoffs. The boy’s basketball team have in recent years too.

Bowie, Nocona compete in VB scrimmages

Published

Nocona’s volleyball team headed to Bowie for a three-team scrimmage with the host team and Ponder Aug. 7.

Each team played the other two for 30 minutes in the Lady Rabbit gym. Lady Indian Coach Sandy Langford said she thought things went well for a first scrimmage.

“Just like any young team that is trying to find itself in a first scrimmage, We looked really good at times and at others not so much,” Langford said. “We’re forming a new team after losing a lot of seniors.”

Langford said the squad would have one thing go wrong and it would explode into several things. That will need to stop for a successful year in Langford’s mind.
