Summer reading programs at the Bowie Public Library will get underway on June and continue through late July.
Theme for this summer’s program is “Oceans of Possibility.” Activities kick off on June 3 as the library sponsors a free bounce house from 7-8 p.m. prior to the movie showing from Bowie Community Development at 303 N. Mason.
Summer reading is open to children ages 0-12 and programs will be at the Bowie Community Center at 10 a.m. every Tuesday in June and July excluding July 5. Children will be given a reading log to bring with them to each program. If they bring their log they will be entered into a drawing for tickets to Castaway Cove courtesy of The Bowie News. Each child also receives a book at the end of the series.
The program schedule will be as follows: June 7, Rise Performing Arts Under the Sea Party; June 14, Touch a Boat, children will have an opportunity to look at many different watercraft and the Boy Scouts will teach knot-typing; June 21, make your own aquarium craft; June 28, movie day; July 12, Shark Week featuring the Creature Teacher; July 19, build a boat craft; July 26, Raingutter Regatta, children will race their boats down inflatable rain gutters using straws.
Library Director Beth Hiatt said there also will be two teen programs for those ages 12-18. At 1 p.m. on June 17 there will be an interactive movie day and at 1 p.m. on July 22 bottle lid art day.
The Summer Learning Programs are sponsored by the Friends of the Bowie Public Library and a humanities grant.

The 22nd annual July Jam returns on July 27 to the Bowie Community Center West Hall, 413 Pelham Street in Bowie.
There will be a “chickin’ pickin’ fiddling fun time” as guests will be entertained by amazing fiddling tunes and enjoying a chicken meal with delicious homemade jams because it wouldn’t be July Jam without it.
Tickets are just $15 with the event starting at 6 p.m. The funds raised help provide awards for the Championship Fiddler Competition during Chicken and Bread Days Heritage Festival on Oct. 5.
This attracts talented musicians from all over to visit downtown Bowie to test their fiddling skills on stage in the Bowie Fire Hall on Oct. 5.
Along with the live fiddling entertainment, come hungry and be ready to outbid your neighbors at the silent auction or just stop by for a great meal, fellowship and soak in the air conditioning.

The Nocona City Council met this past week making plans for budget and tax rate hearings.
Councilors received a brief update on the 2024-25 budget preparations. City Secretary Revell Hardison said the final proposal is almost complete and they now await the arrival of the no-new revenue tax rate that will be reviewed by the council after it is calculated by the tax collector.
The proposal includes a tax rate increase of about 3% similar to last year and there will be a small increase in water and sewer rates, but Hardison said the final crunch on those will come after the tax rate projections arrive.
