Bowie boy’s cross country finishes second at district
The Bowie boy’s cross country team finished second at the district cross country meet at Holliday on a dreary Monday morning.
It was the program’s second straight district runner-up finish and will also make it the fifth year in a row to qualify for the regional meet.
They faced a stacked Holliday team made up of freshman that almost all finished in the top 10 and easily won first place. Henrietta was the other challenger and had two runners finish in the top 10.
Despite the Jackrabbits’ top runner Nathan Rodgers, who finished fourth overall with a time of 17:40, being the only runner to finish in the top 10 it was the strength of how consistently the next four Bowie runners finished which led to a second place finish.
James Fitch ended up just outside the top 10 in 11th place with a time of 18:36. Liam Pearson, Monte Mayfield and Ryder McChesney then finished 14th, 15th and 16th to complete the Jackrabbit’s scoring.
Though their points did not count towards the team’s total, the sixth and seventh runners were also running close together only a few spots back as Alex Castro and Ethan Malone finished 19th and 20th.
In the girl’s race before only Jojo Villarreal represented Bowie. She finished 28th overall with a time of 14:57 in the seniors final cross country race.
The junior varsity runners ran in the same race as the varsity in both and Bowie had half of the eight participants in the boy’s race. Jax Williams, Gavin Catano and Kaz Williams finished first, second and third among JV runners. Austin Jones then finished seventh.
Coach Andy Atkins was pleased overall with what he saw from his runners as they ran like they have been all season.
“Holliday is really good and we knew that coming in so we didn’t worry about that,” Atkins said. “We just wanted to run our race. I knew if we did then beating everyone else was well within reach. We did that and we actually ran really well. This is three years in a row of getting district champs or runners-up so I think we are doing pretty well. We are excited for regionals in a couple of weeks.
The regional meet is scheduled for Oct. 25 at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock. The team will have to finish among the top three or an individual will need to finish among the top 10 to qualify for the state meet.

Norwood new Bowie boys hoop coach
Landry Norwood has agreed to become the new Head Boys Basketball Coach for Bowie High.
Norwood grew up in Paradise, playing a number of sports for the Panthers during his high school career. With a number of family members still in the area and the position coming open, Norwood applied and was hired.
“I know the tradition up here,” Norwood said. “I was glad (Athletic Director and Head Football) Coach Tyler Price felt he could put his trust in me.”
Bowie’s varsity went 2-10 last year, both wins coming against Vernon. Norwood spent five years as an assistant in Lipan before spending the next four years at Llano, three years as head coach. He said his last two years in Llano were rough after graduation of nine seniors his first year and a 26-7 squad.

Nocona softball falls to Archer City
Nocona came into game two of its Class 2A Division I bi-district series with Archer City looking to rebound from a 17-0 loss in game one.
The Lady Indians took a quick lead but the Lady ‘Cats had too much in the tank and knocked Nocona out of the playoffs courtesy of a 13-3, five-inning victory winning the best of three series, 2-0.
Kylea Wallace reached base on a second baseman’s error. With one out, M’leigha Franklin took a pitch over the wall in left field for a home run, igniting the Lady Indian crowd with a 2-0 lead.
Archer City prevented further damage by retiring the next two hitters. The Lady ‘Cats struck in the bottom of the inning for seven runs.

Lady Rabbits win bi-district
Culture. It’s a beautiful word.
Bowie Softball Coach Griffin Fields has been trying to install a positive, winning culture since taking over the job. For the first time since 2019, the Lady Rabbits qualified for the postseason, facing District 8 top seed Early in the bi-district round.
After beating the Lady ‘Horns 9-8 in game one of the best-of-three series April 23, Early came back and evened the series less than 24 hours later, 15-0. The Lady Rabbits used the aforementioned culture and got out to a quick lead in game three.
Bowie was then forced to come from behind for the second straight night. Kinley Baker, who had the game winning RBI in game one, came through again in game three and broke a 6-all tie with a single to lift the Lady Rabbits to a 9-6 victory in the finale.
