Nocona’s football slate certainly has challenges

Editor’s Note: This is the start of a five-part series on high school football schedules, beginning with Nocona. All other football teams will have stories on their 2014 season slate.
Every two years, the University Interscholastic League realigns districts in the sport of football.
This time around, the process certainly didn’t do any favors for Nocona High School as the Indians were placed in an eight-team district.
“We didn’t get a good draw,” Nocona head coach Brad Keck acknowledged. “They added two more teams to what was a six-team district. It’s going to be a whole lot tougher.”
Nocona will play as a member of Conference 3A Division II District 2. The district features a near murderer’s row with the likes of Cisco, Eastland, Henrietta and City View (Wichita Falls). Cisco, Eastland and Millsap are new district foes.
Jacksboro and Holliday also comprise this formidable district.
Keep in mind, all former Conference 2A schools are now 3A, as designated by the UIL.
The Indians lost non-district games with Archer City and Valley View. Keck said Nocona has played both towns for several years.
Nocona will open the regular season slate at Alvord on Aug. 29, and follow that up with another road game at Muenster on Sept. 5.
The home opener is set for Sept. 12 versus Ponder, and the district opener will also be the Indians’ homecoming against Henrietta.
Cisco is a defending state champion, defeating Refugio 56-36. The Loboes feature two preseason all-state players in offensive lineman Baily Edwards and defensive back Kotie Hoover. For more and a complete Nocona schedule, read the mid-week edition of The Bowie News.

Bowie, Nocona compete in VB scrimmages
Nocona’s volleyball team headed to Bowie for a three-team scrimmage with the host team and Ponder Aug. 7.
Each team played the other two for 30 minutes in the Lady Rabbit gym. Lady Indian Coach Sandy Langford said she thought things went well for a first scrimmage.
“Just like any young team that is trying to find itself in a first scrimmage, We looked really good at times and at others not so much,” Langford said. “We’re forming a new team after losing a lot of seniors.”
Langford said the squad would have one thing go wrong and it would explode into several things. That will need to stop for a successful year in Langford’s mind.

New Nocona gym nearing completion
Two major portions of Nocona’s 2023 bond issue are very close to being completed.
The new high school gym should be complete in time for the volleyball team to begin practice there Aug. 1, according to Superintendent Dr. David Waters. Ground on the 22,000 square foot facility was broken on Oct. 18, 2024.
Waters said a punch list meeting with the construction manager was scheduled for earlier this week with final touchups expected shortly afterwards. Fans should be able to enjoy the facility for the volleyball team’s season opener Aug. 11.
Fans will enjoy the new gym from entering the facility which has glass walls, enabling fans to watch the game from the foyer. Once inside the gym itself, there is stadium, chair back seating on the home side allowing for a much more comfortable experience.
