Budget hikes start early as MCTAD presents its budget to commissioners

Montague County Commissioners got their first look at higher expenses that can be anticipated for the new budget year as the appraisal district submitted its 2026-27 budget for consideration and the county also learned how much its health insurance will be go up in the new year.
The court met for its first meeting in June Monday. Kim Haralson, chief appraiser, presented the Montague County Tax Appraisal District budget proposal making her first stop with commissioners. She explained the budget is driven by a focus on cost-containment and reduction in operating expenses where possible.
“The abundance of growth we continue to see in the county is not showing any indication of slowing down. We are continuing to maintain five staff members for appraising as they have for 38 years.

Bowie Water plant to begin summer chlorine coversion

The annual summer chlorine conversion at the City of Bowie Water Treatment Plant will run Aug. 6 to Sept. 5.
Jerry Sutton, plant supervisor, said customers may notice some minor odor and taste issues with the water during this period as the treatment system changes disinfectant. This is a yearly state mandate for the conversion. Questions may be directed to the water plant at 940-872-6414
The plant uses a combination of ammonia and chlorine called chloramines. Across a period of time those ingredients build up in the system and it takes a change to straight chlorine across 28 days to clear it out. At the end of 30 days the water should return to normal.
