Stark acknowledges Bowie’s slate isn’t easy

Bowie High School head football coach Dylan Stark said the 2014 schedule certainly isn’t easy – and that’s district and non-district games alike.
The Jackrabbits will open the season on the road at Wichita Falls Hirschi on Aug. 29. The game will take place at Memorial Stadium at 7:30 p.m.
The University Interscholastic League redrew districts this past year, a process that takes place every two years. In addition, all high schools across the state of Texas were bumped up one conference as part of a new nomenclature.
Bowie will play in the new Conference 3A Division I District 4. The district also features Breckenridge, Boyd, Brock, Ponder and Paradise.
“The new district brings us new faces with Breckenridge and Brock,” Stark said. “This will be a tough district from top to bottom. Nothing will be easy. Trips to Boyd, Breckenridge and Ponder will be a challenge. Three out of our five district games are on the road.”
Conveniently, the Jackrabbits’ bye comes the week before their district slate begins on Oct. 10 on the road at Boyd. The district slate wraps up on Nov. 7 with the Senior Night game at home versus Paradise.
Breckenridge features a new head coach in Casey Hubble, who inherits a deep roster with 16 returning starters. Pick up the weekend edition of The Bowie News for more on this story, plus a clip-and-save schedule, too.

Bowie, Nocona compete in VB scrimmages
Nocona’s volleyball team headed to Bowie for a three-team scrimmage with the host team and Ponder Aug. 7.
Each team played the other two for 30 minutes in the Lady Rabbit gym. Lady Indian Coach Sandy Langford said she thought things went well for a first scrimmage.
“Just like any young team that is trying to find itself in a first scrimmage, We looked really good at times and at others not so much,” Langford said. “We’re forming a new team after losing a lot of seniors.”
Langford said the squad would have one thing go wrong and it would explode into several things. That will need to stop for a successful year in Langford’s mind.

New Nocona gym nearing completion
Two major portions of Nocona’s 2023 bond issue are very close to being completed.
The new high school gym should be complete in time for the volleyball team to begin practice there Aug. 1, according to Superintendent Dr. David Waters. Ground on the 22,000 square foot facility was broken on Oct. 18, 2024.
Waters said a punch list meeting with the construction manager was scheduled for earlier this week with final touchups expected shortly afterwards. Fans should be able to enjoy the facility for the volleyball team’s season opener Aug. 11.
Fans will enjoy the new gym from entering the facility which has glass walls, enabling fans to watch the game from the foyer. Once inside the gym itself, there is stadium, chair back seating on the home side allowing for a much more comfortable experience.
