STORM CENTER: Weather plays a role in sports

“Love seems sure around the new year.
Now it’s April. Love is just a ghost.
Spring arrived on time.
Only, what became of you, dear?
Spring can really hang you up the most.”
The above lyrics are from a song titled, “Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most,” which was written by Tommy Wolf with lyrics by Fran Landesman.
This is a jazz rendition from the opening line of T.S. Eliot’s The Waste Land, “April is the cruelest month.” The song, written in 1955, is one of the most popular period pieces in jazz.
So many singers have performed this tune, ranging from Ella Fitzgerald to Bette Midler to Rickie Lee Jones.
April can be the cruelest month, especially since I’m peering out the window and the sky is a soulless, sullen gray.
One never knows what to expect from Mother Nature at this time of year.
You’ll also notice on the front page of the newspaper, I’ve written a piece on the Montague Emergency Communications Team, Inc., a group that springs into action during severe weather.
This is the time of year when baseball and softball coaches turn into amateur meteorologists.
Coaches have been very good telling The Bowie News when games will or have been cancelled, or times have changed.
Editor’s Note: The Storm Center column is the expressed written views of sports editor Eric Viccaro and not The Bowie News.
Because this was technically a City View home game, Bowie was visitor in its own ballpark on Tuesday. Bowie batted first, and eventually won 17-0 over the Mustangs. (News photo by Eric Viccaro)
