Field events will be taking center stage for three Montague County-based athletes.
The University Interscholastic League state meet is set for Mike A. Myers Stadium at the University of Texas in Austin from May 14-16.
In order, Forestburg’s Cheyenne Banks will compete in the Conference 1A girls’ shot put at 10 a.m. on May 15.
Saint Jo’s Sarah Patrick is set for the 1A girls’ pole vaulting competition at 3 p.m. on the same day.
Bowie’s Zeke Vaughan will leap in the boys’ Conference 3A high jump at 10 a.m. on May 16.
Banks, Patrick and Vaughan are all juniors. Banks also qualified for the state meet last year, but in the discus.
Vaughan finished second at the Conference 3A Region II meet in the high jump, leaping to a mark of 6-feet, 4-inches, one inch less than winner Trenton Wallace of Grandview.
“I started off at 6-feet, and I cleared it on my first attempt,” Vaughan said. “I was stoked. I cleared 6-2 on my third attempt, so I knew I had a good chance (to qualify for state). When I cleared 6-4 on my first attempt, it was crazy.”
For Vaughan, competing at the state meet is the fulfillment of a dream come true.
Vaughan is an exceptional athlete competing at a high level in a broad range of events from jumps to hurdles and relays.
The high jump area is located inside the track near a giant scoreboard, and that’s where Vaughan hopes to work his magic this Saturday. Read more in the mid-week Bowie News.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys
New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

Botard new BHS girls BB coach
After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.
Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.
“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”
Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
