FISHING: Texas Bass Classic this weekend

The Toyota Texas Bass Classic is scheduled for May 23-25 on Lake Fork in rural Athens.
This is commonly called the world championship of bass fishing, but the goal of the tournament was actually to involve more youth in the sport.
Texas Parks and Wildlife Department fisheries biologists had a vision to turn Lake Fork into the best bass fishing lake it could be.
The bass classic was the brainchild of several people: Professional angler Kelly Jordon, ranch owner Donato Ramos, a TPWD commissioner, and department chairman Dan Friedkin.
Lake Fork turned into one of the nation’s top bass-fishing destinations.
TPWD estimates the lake produces 15,000 fish weighing seven pounds or more. It has produced more than 250 entries into the ShareLunker program, which requires fish weighing at least 13 pounds.
The current state record largemouth bass weighing 18.18 pounds was caught at Lake Fork.
Keith Combs won the 2014 tournament, catching a three-day total weight of 110 pounds of fish.
Single-day general admission tickets are $8 in advance (online) and $15 at the door, Saturday through Monday, of tournament weekend. VIP ticket options are also available. Military members will receive a discount on tickets.
For information and/or tickets, go to the website www.toyotabassclassic.com or by calling the tournament office at 1-866-907-0143. The site also features videos from the two most recent classics.
