IN BRIEF: Howard softball takes 4th in nation

The Howard College softball team finished fourth at the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I national tournament in St. George, Utah.
Bowie’s Karly Weber was a member of the team this season, and she pitched sparingly.
Chattanooga State (Tenn.) defeated Howard 8-2 on May 15. With the loss, the Hawks took fourth overall.
Howard opened the tournament with a win in the double-elimination tournament, defeating Jefferson (Mo.) College 4-3 in 10 innings May 13.
Chipola (Fla.) defeated Howard 6-1 in the next round of action, forcing the Hawks into the loser’s bracket.
Howard staved off elimination for three straight games, defeating Navarro (Texas) by a count of 6-5 in 11 innings. The Hawks then beat Wabash Valley (Ill.) 8-5 and Blinn (Texas) 7-6 before facing Chattanooga State.
