First-year Gold-Burg High School Head Volleyball Coach Lyndsey Shaw said Aug. 4 can’t get here fast enough.
“I’m very excited (to start the season),” said Shaw, who returns to her native Montague County after spending the past several seasons coaching at Clifton. “I’ve been going stir crazy at home. I’m ready to work and get it started.”
This week, Shaw has updated the Gold-Burg website with the Bears’ season practice schedule.
On Aug. 4, the first acceptable date the University Interscholastic League allows for practice, the Bears will begin two-a-days.
From 7:30-8:30 a.m., there will be a conditioning session followed by a 30-minute break. Then, there will be skill work and drills from 9-11 a.m.
On Aug. 8, Gold-Burg will play in a three-team scrimmage at Perrin with Millsap. The regular season opens several days later on Aug. 12 as the Bears travel to Electra.
The home opener won’t take place until Aug. 26 against Graford, followed by another home match on Aug. 28 against the Wichita Falls Heat, a team featuring homeschooled student-athletes.
The Bears play in one regular-season tournament at Chico, which will also feature fellow county schools Saint Jo, Prairie Valley and Forestburg. Shaw previously coached at Chico. See more of this story, including a season schedule, in the weekend edition of The Bowie News.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys
New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

Botard new BHS girls BB coach
After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.
Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.
“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”
Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
