Workman Watch: July 26 edition
Former Bowie High School pitcher Brandon Workman has found his groove again, as the Pawtucket Red Sox defeated the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs 5-1 on Thursday at Coca-Cola Park in Allentown, Pa.
Workman yielded just one earned run, one walk and five hits in six innings of work.
This means Workman has won all three of his starts since returning to the Boston Red Sox’ Triple-A franchise.
Workman (6-1) lowered his minor-league earned-run average to 4.45.
Overall this season for Pawtucket, Workman has allowed 27 earned runs and 58 hits in 54-2/3 innings of work through 10 starts. He’s struck out 49, walked 15, and surrendered nine home runs.
In the game last night, Pawtucket’s offense helped Workman by scoring two runs in the first inning. The PawSox added one run in the sixth and two more in the seventh.
The Major League Baseball trade deadline is next Thursday, July 31. There’s the possibility the Red Sox might trade starter Jake Peavy, who has been ineffective for Boston this season.
If Peavy is traded, there’s a chance Workman could be called back to the Red Sox next week. As for now, it’s unclear whether his next start will be for Pawtucket or Boston.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys
New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

Botard new BHS girls BB coach
After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.
Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.
“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”
Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
