Carnes purchases Nighthawks, team alive

Published

on

The Wichita Falls Nighthawks will return to the gridiron – just in a different form – as was announced on Thursday morning at the Kay Yeager Coliseum.
Drew Carnes and his wife, Teri, announced the Nighthawks will be transformed into an arena football team. Carnes has purchased the team from former owners Jerry and Michelle Hughes.
Hughes founded the Nighthawks as an outdoor team in 2012 along with another business partner. Hughes recently attempted to push the franchise through another season, but the financial losses became too much for him to bear.
The outdoor version of the squad officially ceased on July 18.
Carnes said he was compelled to take over the franchise because of its strong community involvement.
Recently, the city of Wichita Falls purchased Yeager Coliseum, complete with new artificial turf and an upgraded scoreboard.
Hughes declined a position with the new franchise.
Carnes said he’s in negotiations with the city of Wichita Falls for Yeager Coliseum to serve as the host site for the club, and he’s confident a deal will happen. Read more in the weekend edition of The Bowie News.

Published

New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.

“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”

McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.

McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.
