The Bowie High School volleyball team worked out the kinks with a scrimmage on Saturday in the high school gymnasium.
It was all in preparation for Tuesday’s season-opening match against regional qualifier Archer City here at home.
Look in the weekend Bowie News for complete results.
Bowie head volleyball coach Jeanie Stark had every reason to be happy with the Lady Rabbits’ performance.
Bowie split with Conference 4A Iowa Park in the opener and followed that with a two-set thrashing of Graham, another 4A program. The Lady Rabbits showed great resolve in splitting with Conference 5A Azle, coming back from three points down to win one of the sets.
“It was encouraging,” Stark said. “We were playing against good teams, playoff teams, and we were right there with them. For the sixth day of the season, I was pleased.”
Libero Karsen Morgan was a focal point, delivering solid passes to the setters and hitters. The Lady Rabbits showed strong communication and teamwork.
“We still have some work to do,” Stark said. “We still need to work on our defense and our serve receive.”
The Lady Rabbits will be using a 6-2 offense this season.
One of the more dangerous components for Bowie will be its unpredictability while serving. Read more in the mid-week edition of The Bowie News.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys
New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

Botard new BHS girls BB coach
After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.
Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.
“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”
Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
