The State of Texas has one of the earliest, if not the earliest start time for its scholastic volleyball season.
Teams began the season Aug. 12 in the evening.
Look in the weekend Bowie News for complete results.
Bowie took on Archer City, ranked eighth in Conference 2A in the inaugural Texas Girls Coaches Association poll of the season.
Forestburg played home against first-year program Alvord. Saint Jo played host to the Red River Rattlers, a team of homeschooled players. Prairie Valley was also home, for Savoy.
Two of our teams took to the road as Nocona challenged Conference 4A Iowa Park and Gold-Burg played at Electra in a rare Tuesday afternoon match.
“It’s exciting,” said Saint Jo head coach Kristi Tallon. “The season has come by fast. We’re excited to get into a game. We’ve been practicing, and we want to put all of our skills to use (against someone else).”
Saint Jo will vie for a playoff spot with fellow Conference 2A, Region 2, District 10 teams Forestburg, Prairie Valley and Gold-Burg.
Tallon said she likes the Panthers’ versatility, with her daughter Hunter Tallon at both setter and outside hitter along with outside hitter/setter Karla Hernandez and defensive specialist Mixie Carrasco.
Jeannie Carpenter expects Prairie Valley to be better this season, in the second season of her second stint with the Bulldogs. For more, read the mid-week edition of The Bowie News.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys

Published

New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.

“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”

McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.

McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.

Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.

“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”

Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
