There are so many connections for everyone involved at the “Buckle Up For Lane’s Sake” Tournament, and this year proves no different.
The tournament is named in honor of Lane Fenoglio, who was killed in an auto accident on July 11, 1998, the summer before what would have been her sophomore year at Nocona High School.
“It’s so nice to see Lane’s memory kept alive,” said Lane’s mother, Janna Fenoglio.
The tournament will take place on Thursday and Saturday, Sept. 4 and 6 at various places in Nocona, including all three school gymnasiums as well as Baptist gym and “The Dome” in Saint Jo.
This year, Anderson-Shiro will travel up and compete in the same bracket as Bowie, along with Sanger, Ponder and Celina. All these teams will comprise Pool F.
Nocona is in Pool E, with pesky Petrolia, Bryson, Dodd City and Bonham. The Nocona JV will play in Pool A along with S&S Consolidated of Sadler, Henrietta, City View, Archer City and Burkburnett.
Tickets cost $6 for adults and $2 for students. There will be no charge for students attending Thursday’s matches.
Janna Fenoglio said Anderson-Shiro will stay at the Veranda Inn, and it marks a homecoming for one of the mothers.
Kathy Walker-Sayers, formerly of Ringgold, was Lane’s babysitter when she was young. Walker-Sayers’ daughter, Keaton, plays for Anderson-Shiro. Read more of the story in the mid-week edition of The Bowie News.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys
New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

Botard new BHS girls BB coach
After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.
Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.
“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”
Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
