Bowie ISD may adopt a deficit budget
By BARBARA GREEN
Bowie School Trustees don’t like it, but it appears they may adopt a deficit budget for the 2015-16 school year.
The board heard the dire budget news in a workshop during Monday night’s regular board meeting.
Chief Financial Officer Jonathan Pastusek said state revenue will drop by almost $2 million due to the change in property values in 2015, and despite reducing budget requests by more than $1 million the budget will “be upside down.”
As the workshop began, Superintendent Steven Monkres reiterated they all knew the energy production wave that drove property values during the past five to six years would come to an end. He said that day is here, but the district has been preparing by setting funds aside each year.
Pastusek proposed a budget of $13,974,406, which is less than the $14,462,746 amended for 2014-15. That is a 4.56 percent, or $668,340 reduction in the budget.
Under revenues, the CFO said overall revenues dropped about 10 percent.

The heat advisory that has been in place all week continues until 8 p.m. Friday night.
The National Weather Service reports strong high pressure overhead will bring triple digit high temperatures along with heat index readings approaching 110 degrees for much of next week. Make sure to check on your older neighbors to make sure they are staying cool and hydrates, and make sure pets have shade and water.
