City of Bowie officials got a close-up look at the operations of its largest vendor, Bryan Texas Utilities last week as they toured generation facilities, control rooms and met with staff members who study and forecast the market.
City Manager Bert Cunningham, Mayor Gaylynn Burris, Councilor Wayne Bell and Jay Evans, head of the city electric department, made the trip to Bryan on March 21-22. They toured the Roland C. Dansby Power Plant.
The City of Bowie has a 30-year contract to purchase power from BTU, spending more than $5.4 million a year to purchase bulk power. Last fall, after lengthy negotiations, the city received a reduction in its cost which was passed on to primarily residential customers.
The city also received a contract amendment allowing it to purchase or generate up to two megawatts of power from other sources. The advantage could bring a reduction in transmission fees on that two megawatts along with a reduction in the city’s peak demand.
The tour began at BTU’s local utility control room where they monitor the entire local BTU system.
