The legacy of Carter, one of Texas’ most influential media moguls and Bowie’s most celebrated native son, will take center stage in his hometown. The play stars Kelvin Dilks as Amon Carter Sr.
On Aug. 23 the hit award-winning play – “AMON! The Ultimate Texan — chronicling the remarkable life and career of Amon G. Carter Sr.” will be performed at the Bowie Junior High Auditorium, with two shows at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.

The true-to-life comedy performance coincides with the upcoming 30th Annual Chicken and Bread Days Heritage Festival, honoring the community’s rich history—and fittingly so, as Carter was one of Bowie’s original “Chicken and Bread Boys.” The play brings to life the powerful story of the man who helped shape Texas through journalism, civic leadership, and business, and who famously said: “Man must not live off his community. He must live with it.”
Presented in partnership with Bowie Independent School District, the Bowie Alliance for Education and the Arts and Bowie Community Development, the production celebrates not only Carter’s profound legacy but also Bowie’s continuing commitment to arts, culture, and local heritage.
“Amon” is written by Dave Lieber who has worked as a newspaper columnist for more than 25 years at the Fort Worth Star Telegram and then at The Dallas Morning News. He has authored eight books
