It was a crushing day for Bowie Memorial Hospital Wednesday as the board met with employees to thank them for their service and announced it will begin the closing process at a Monday meeting.

The board had hoped to move forward with creating a new hospital district, but on Tuesday voters overwhelmingly said no. The ballots came in with 1,548 for the proposition for a district to include Bowie and Gold-Burg Independent School Districts and 1,732 against.

The proposition failed with 53 percent voting no and a 184 vote difference.

Through tears and pain the board announced plans to begin the closing process. An official board meeting to outline those timelines will take place at 4 p.m. Monday. The Walk-in Clinic was closed Wednesday and new patient admissions stopped on Thursday.
