The Midwestern State University football team finished No. 24 in the final American Football Coaches’ Association Division II poll this season.
The Mustangs qualified for the playoffs for the seventh time and had a winning season for the 17th consecutive year – the longest streak for any four-year scholarship program in Texas.
In a driving blizzard at Kansas City last week, Northwest Missouri State won their third championship in four years with a 29-3 conquest over North Alabama.
Northwest Missouri State took all 30 first-place votes with North Alabama second. The Bearcats finished with an unblemished 15-0 mark.
This is the fourth time MSU finished the year ranked in the final AFCA poll.
The Mustangs received 110 voting points, and finished the season with an 8-3 record. Center Akoakoa Kennedy won the prestigious Rimington Award last week.
Other ranked teams of note in the poll were Harding (Ark.) in sixth – Harding is where former Bowie player Madison Firmin played college football – with Texas A&M-Commerce ninth, Colorado Mines 15th and Asuza Pacific 25th.
Texas A&M-Kingsville, one of MSU’s Lone Star Conference rivals, also was considered in the polling. Read the Dec. 31 Bowie News for more sports digest items.
