Bowie, ranked number 21 in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Conference 3A rankings, opened the season at home Tuesday against Burkburnett.
Bowie made a strong case for moving up in those rankings after a decisive 58-22 win.
“The team played hard,” said head coach Colby Davis-Pastusek. “It was a really good first game.”
Bowie seized control of the game from the start as Courtney Brady recovered her own rebound for the team’s first points of the season.
Once the Lady Rabbits grabbed the lead, they never lost it. Burkburnett finally reached double digits midway through the third quarter.
The Lady Rabbits established a 36-7 lead by intermission. For the game, Bowie held Burkburnett to 29 percent field-goal shooting.
“I was proud of the defensive effort,” Davis said. “It’s really good when you can hold opponents to single digit scoring for a couple quarters; it’s one of our goals. We played sound defense in full and half court.”
Only in the fourth quarter, when the game was already decided, was Burkburnett competitive. Read the weekend Bowie News for more, including a complete box score. Buy an e-subscription to The Bowie News.
