HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Bowie girls bounce Decatur by 34

The Bowie High School girls’ basketball team had a six-day break between games.
That freshness was apparent Friday as the Lady Rabbits had little trouble with visiting Conference 4A school Decatur, dispatching the Eagles by a score of 69-35 at BHS Gymnasium.
Bowie head coach Colby Davis-Pastusek was understandably pleased with the outcome, especially with how the Lady Rabbits kept the Eagles to single-digit point totals in the opening three quarters.
“Our kids played well defensively, Davis-Pastusek said. “We executed on offense, and scored points off our defense. We also limited Decatur’s offensive rebounds, and didn’t give them many opportunities for second chances.”
Davis-Pastusek was also satisfied with the Lady Rabbits’ balance on offense as four girls scored in double figures – paced by Courtney Brady’s 19-point effort.
Bowie, with a record of 10-4, opened district play on Tuesday evening at Boyd. The Lady Rabbits also will play Henrietta this week.
The Lady Rabbits held Decatur to only 34 field-goal attempts and the Eagles had only seven chances at the free-throw line. Meanwhile, Bowie recorded 58 field-goal attempts.
Bowie played “happy hands” defense with 19 steals. Kamryn Cantwell and Addy Cook both had five swipes. Jordan Brightwell and Brady had three steals each.
That’s how dominating Bowie’s defense was, especially seeing the 6-foot-1 Brightwell reading Decatur’s passing lanes for steals – something not too many post players can pull off easily. Read more, and see the complete box score in the mid-week Bowie News in print and with your online subscription.
