City of Bowie wraps up early retirement buy-outs for seven

Published

By BARBARA GREEN

Early retirement buy-outs are not uncommon for companies or entities that may want to consider eliminating some of its longer tenured employees, who also are often in the higher paid positions.

The Bowie City Council began discussing this plan in October. At that initial meeting City Manager Ricky Tow said they had 11 employees eligible with either 20 years of service or 10 years of service and age 60 or older. Seven committed to the buy-out and announced they would retire at the end of the year.

The proposal negotiated with the employees is for a year’s salary plus a $7,500 insurance allowance per year for three years. It would be paid in three lump sum payments over three years starting January 2015. Read the full story in the weekend News.
