The Saint Jo volleyball team will eschew scrimmages before beginning the season on Aug. 12 against the Red River Rattlers.
The Rattlers are a team of homeschooled students based in Whitesboro.
Saint Jo head coach Kristi Tallon, who is entering her third season as coach, has been pleased with the turnout for summer workouts.
“It’s the most we’ve had in a long time,” she said.
Tallon, who was a middle hitter for the Panthers in the late-1990s, also reported the girls are taking advantage of open gymnasium time to play.
The weightlifting and conditioning program has started at 8 a.m. Monday through Thursday during the summer. Some girls have also attended camps at the University of North Texas and Texas Christian University.
The Panthers will participate in the same tournaments they did last season at Bryson (Aug. 14-16) and Chico (Aug. 21-23). Gold-Burg is also competing at the Chico Tournament.
In the non-district portion of the schedule, Saint Jo has added Savoy this season. This will mark the second season the Panthers have played S&S Consolidated from Sadler. Read more in the weekend Bowie News, which includes a clip-and-save season schedule.
