In the second quarter of Friday’s Texas 6-Man Coaches Association Division II all-star football game, Gold-Burg’s Timothy Metz got open.
And Metz grabbed a touchdown pass from Tyler Mays in helping the East to a comfortable 68-38 victory over the West at Memorial Stadium in Wichita Falls.
“We were running a Jaybird offense,” Metz said. “I caught the ball downfield in the end zone.”
The weakside out pattern worked like a charm, he said.
“It was exciting to score and to be able to put points on the board,” said Metz, a Bowie resident who recently graduated from Gold-Burg.
Metz said the East team was motivated to win because the players heard all week the West was supposed to win.
“We expected more of a challenge,” Metz said. “But, we were all confident in our offense.”
Metz was the first-ever selection in Gold-Burg’s 10-year football history to be chosen to play in this acclaimed all-star contest.
“It was a learning experience for me,” Metz said. “We had a bunch of players from all over the state. We learned different offenses and defenses, and I made new friends with the other athletes and coaches.”
Last season, Gold-Burg finished second in district play and qualified for the playoffs despite finishing with a 3-8 record. The Bears lost to Strawn in the opening round of the Conference 1A Division II playoffs.
At Gold-Burg, Metz was an all-district linebacker and running back this season. The 6-foot-3, 225-pounder was also post on the Bears’ basketball squad and he competed in sprints during track and field season. Read more in the mid-week edition of The Bowie News.
