HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Area teams face daunting tasks

Two area teams face the daunting task of going on the road and facing powerhouse teams this Friday.
Nocona travels to Cisco for a District 2-3A-II game with the Loboes while Gold-Burg plays at Tioga, a blossoming force in six-man football.
This Cisco team isn’t as strong as in years past, but the Loboes (4-1, 2-0) are still outscoring opponents by a 159-77 through five games.
“Cisco is a very good football team,” Nocona head coach Brad Keck said. “They are a power football team. They run multiple things in the I-formation and shotgun.”
Nocona has to play like there’s nothing to lose.
The Indians will be starting Charles Evans at quarterback for Jeremy James, who suffered a shoulder injury in last Friday’s 20-6 loss to Holliday.
James lay on the field for several minutes while attended to by trainers and medical professionals. He went transported to Nocona General Hospital by Nocona EMS. The diagnosis was a broken clavicle.
Offensively, Keck said Nocona must account for Taylor Massey. It will be up to running back Emmanuel Gayton to power it all. Gayton has rushed for 342 yards with two touchdowns this season.
“They like to move Massey around, so we are going to have to be aware of him at all times,” Keck said. “We’ll have to keep our tabs on him.”

Gold-Burg prepares for Tioga
Winless Gold-Burg is preparing for a Tioga team that has outscored opponents 357- 136 behind the likes of Micah Villa, Cade Gibson and Austin Sprabary leading the attack.
Tioga is coached by former Holliday coach Cody Patton, who will help with the Bulldogs’ eventual transition from six-man to 11-man football in the years to come.
Gold-Burg coach Jay Johnson said the Bears run a balanced set on offense.
Look for different defensive alignments based on what Gold-Burg runs on offense. The Bulldogs will employ an odd-man front when the Bears are lined up tight for a possible run. Read more in the mid-week Bowie News.

Nocona got its new press box into place this week at Jack Crane Stadium. The old press box, which was in place for more than 60 years, was taken out in early June and moved to Indian Valley Raceway. The new press box was by the Southern Bleacher Company out of Graham. Athletic Director Black Crutsinger said they looked at a lot of press boxes and decided they liked the one at Lindsay High School and went with that model. Sean Hutson operated the crane from the Hurd Crane Service that put the press box up for Nocona.
