FISHING NOTEBOOK: Bowie anglers trek to Sanger

The Bowie High School fishing team will be in action on March 19 as the Texas High School Bass Association West Division season rolls on.
All three Bowie two-person teams will compete – Mitch Sanders and Jared Stone, Lane Hopson and Hadley Morgan and Jeremy Stone and Kollin Gillaspia – at Lake Ray Roberts in rural Sanger.
Hopson and Morgan are currently fifth in the field of 223 teams for angler of the year. Sanders and Stone are 16th and Gillaspia and Stone in the top-third of the list as well.
Overall, Bowie sits ninth in the team of the year standings. The Jackrabbits have totaled 275 points, which is only 21 points away from a first-place tie with Arlington and Keller.
Boat check will begin as early as 4 a.m., at Ray Roberts Marina.
Brown trout returns
In March, the Guadalupe River Chapter of Trout Unlimited will stock about 900 brown trout averaging 14 inches in the Canyon Dam tailrace.
Canyon Dam is located 24 miles north of New Braunfels. The tailrace itself extends 14 miles downstream of Canyon Dam on the Guadalupe River.
Brown trout are popular with anglers, and can survive in slightly higher water temperatures. Read more in the March 16 Bowie News.
