OUTDOORS: CWD found in Texas Panhandle

A free-ranging mule deer buck, harvested in Hartley County, has been confirmed positive for CWD.
State officials received confirmation on Feb. 26 from the National Veterinary Services Laboratory in Ames, Iowa.
Hartley County is located in the Texas Panhandle, south of Dalhart.
The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) and the Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) will have management response similar to 2012 when CWD was first discovered in free-ranging mule deer in the Hueco Mountains.
This marks the eighth mule deer to test positive for CWD in Texas. The disease prevalence is 10-15 percent within that population, the TPWD reports.
The disease also has been documented in six white-tailed deer in Medina and Lavaca Counties. Read more in the March 5 Bowie News.
