Saturday marks the end of the season as Bowie High School seniors Cristian Martinez and Saul Landaverde compete at the Texas High School Powerlifting Association meet.
And plenty is riding on the line for today’s competitors.
“Last year, I didn’t do too well, so I want to do better,” Martinez said. “It will be a good way to end my senior year. It’s going to take my best to win.”
The first bar will be loaded at 8:45 a.m. today at the Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene, and the action will be frenzied with 11 lifting platforms going at a single time.
Martinez is currently among the top-5 powerlifters in the 132-pound weight division of Conference 3A.
“Cristian has worked really hard this year,” said Bowie strength-and-conditioning coordinator Monte Sewell. “He’s improved by roughly 180-200 pounds this year. His work ethic has put him in position for success.”
Landaverde also stands among the top-half of powerlifters in the 275-pound weight class. Read more in the April 2 Bowie News.
