Meagan and Myah Russell, Bowie High School’s fine No. 1 singles team, moved one step closer to returning to the University Interscholastic League state tournament.
The Russells defeated a tandem from Henrietta in the championship match by a count of 6-4, 6-2 in the District 3A-9 tournament on Wednesday at the BHS outdoor tennis courts.
“The Russells work so well together,” said first-year head coach Avery Tate. “They were able to close on their volleys.”
For Tate, it was the culmination of a successful first year as skipper for the tennis program as Bowie repeated as girls champion with 62 points, 26 more than Henrietta.
Bowie also finished second on the boys’ ladder with 30 points, finishing only behind Henrietta. The Bearcats also won district boys last season.
The match of the day took place at No. 1 girls’ singles as Bowie’s Katelin Price and Hannah Todd from Holliday met yet again in a district title match.
Todd eventually earned the win, defeating Price in three sets by scores of 4-6, 6-1, 6-2. Read more, and see complete team standings, in the April 9 Bowie News.
