HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Basketball has no off season

High school basketball teams may win championships in March, after slogging through the winter.
But, the road to a championship typically starts in June, and that’s with area high school tournaments.
This past weekend, Bowie played host to a State Qualifying Tournament and the Jackrabbits earned second place.
Bowie defeated Sanger and Nocona before falling to Ponder. The Jackrabbits finished third, but earned a qualifying spot since Burkburnett already has done the same.
Due to University Interscholastic League rules, head coaches aren’t allowed to work directly with their players during these tournaments. Rather, this serves as a time for observation.
“We are trying to put a team together,” Bowie head boys’ basketball coach Doug Boxell said. “We are looking to get familiar with each other and help our chemistry.”
Former player Chase Hall served as Bowie’s coach during the event.
Boxell said the competition was strong, and it should help Bowie as it prepares for the overall State Qualifying Tournament set for June 24-26 in Grapevine.
The best part of it is this is not Amateur Athletic Union basketball; rather players are on a school-based team. Read more in the June 8 Bowie News.
