All along, 6-man high school football programs wanted a level playing field with the traditional 11-man game.
For the first-time ever, the University Interscholastic League 11-man and six-man football championship games will be played during the same week at the same venue.
The UIL decided on Thursday to have the 2016 championship games from December 14-17 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
There will be a new schedule with all 12 title contests taking place during a four-day span.
“I’m biased toward having the game at AT&T Stadium because it’s close by and it’s a wonderful facility,” said Gold-Burg head football coach Jay Johnson.
“It puts us on the same level as the big schools,” Johnson added. “We don’t feel like we are the stepbrother.” Read more in the June 1 Bowie News.

Bowie football notes

The Bowie High School football team participated in a state qualifying tournament on Saturday at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls.
Bowie topped Gainesville, but suffered losses to Abilene Wylie and Graham. All three of those schools are members of Conference 4A.
“It was good to get a football in the players’ hands,” Stark said. “It’s the closest thing to actual football we can do right now.”
This coming Saturday, Bowie will play in one more 7-on-7 tournament at Petrolia, but it’s not affiliated with the SQT program.
Bowie will square off against host Petrolia, Burkburnett, Henrietta and Quanah. This event will wrap up the short spring 7-on-7 schedule.
