Forestburg icing down watermelon for festival

The population of Forestburg swells one weekend in the month of August as the community celebrates its favorite fruit: Watermelon.

This year will mark the 36th Annual Watermelon Festival on Aug. 13.

Forestburg’s had a tradition in growing watermelon for generations.

“We all grew up with watermelon patches,” said Debra Dill, president of the Forestburg Community Service Club, which has been in existence for more than three decades, “It’s the loam in the soil.”

The parade, starting at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, makes its way from the school to the general store and post office in this tiny, hearty hamlet. Afterward enjoy cold, sweet free watermelon.
