County pays $500,000 to reduce its TRS liability

The Montague County Commissioner’s Court Monday approved $500,000 to continue paying down the county’s unfunded portion of the retirement liability from the 2020-21 budget.
During the last several years the court has undertaken an effort to pay down the liability number with excess cash that may be left in the budget at the end of the year. Last year $500,000 was paid into the program and the year before it was $700,000.
The 2020-2021 budget is winding down as the Oct. 1 new fiscal year nears. Precinct Four Commissioner Bob Langford, a longtime advocate for reducing the liability, said they have money left in contingency and autopsies from where to draw the funds.

Bowie fish fry to assist youth fair sales on Jan. 4

Enjoy a fish fry and live music concert on Jan. 4 all to support the 4-H and FFA youth of Montague County as they compete in the annual youth fair.
The annual Bowie fish fry for the Bowie buyers group will begin serving at 5:30 p.m. at the Bowie Community Center. Cost is $10 per plate. There will be a live auction at 7 p.m.
The evening’s concert will feature Dax Davis. Live music begins at 8:30 p.m. with the Davis concert at 9:30 p.m. Cost for the concert is $25 per ticket and $20 for a student, or $300 for a reserved table for eight.
