The Bowie and Nocona boy’s powerlifting teams competed one final time this season last week at the state meet in Abilene.
With five Jackrabbits competing in division III and one Indian competing in division IV, no one came home with medals but several came up only one spot short.
Bowie’s Cooper McShan competed in the 132 pound weight class and his 1,050 total tied him with two other lifters. The tie breaker is then who weighs in at the lesser weight. McShan was lighter than one of the lifters, but not the other as he finished in sixth place, just outside of medal contention.
Bowie’s Jakson Hofbauer also finished just outside of medal contention in sixth place. Competing in the 275 weight class, Hofbauer’s 1,635 total was his highest of the season by 50 pounds. Unfortunately, it was 25 pounds off from fifth place.
Hofbauer tied with a lifter from Odem, but he weighed in at a much lower weight to finish ahead in sixth place.
The Jackrabbits Robert Zambrano competed in the 123 weight class and his 920 total was the highest of the season by 30 pounds. He finished 15th overall.
Two Bowie lifters unfortunately did not have good days. Gavin Brown was competing in the 114 class and Johnny Arenas competing in the 198 class both busted out, or did not complete all of their lifts. Arenas completed his squat, with his 585 being 45 pounds more than his previous season best.
From Nocona, senior Miguel Olivares just missed out on a medal finishing sixth as well. Competing in the 132 weight class, he lifted 950 total pounds.

Nocona got its new press box into place this week at Jack Crane Stadium. The old press box, which was in place for more than 60 years, was taken out in early June and moved to Indian Valley Raceway. The new press box was by the Southern Bleacher Company out of Graham. Athletic Director Black Crutsinger said they looked at a lot of press boxes and decided they liked the one at Lindsay High School and went with that model. Sean Hutson operated the crane from the Hurd Crane Service that put the press box up for Nocona.

In the eight-and-under division, Whitley Goins won the top cowgirl and Trell Carpenter won top cowboy. Goins got the fastest times in barrel racing, flags and mystery event. Carpenter got the fastest time in poles and goats.
