Drainage project has big progress

The drainage project at Nelson and Mill saw major progress as the first concrete drain boxes went in along with pipe. These 42-inch corrugated PVC pipes will connect to the inlet box at Mill. The bridge and rusted culverts and pipes have been removed. The pipes will flow through the 11-feet X 6-feet concrete culvert boxes which will be tied together and set in the creek, going under Nelson to Lamb Street.The project contractor has removed all the rusted out galvanized culverts that were located under Nelson Street at Kiwanis Park, along with the bridge that went across the creek that flows through the park. Truck driver killed in accident

A California man was killed in a one-vehicle accident in Clay County the night of Feb. 6.
Officers with the Department of Public Safety reported the wreck occurred at 10:27 p.m. on Feb. 6 at U.S. 287 and Belknap Creek Road, approximately one mile southeast of Bellevue.
Sandeep Singh, 34, Manteca, CA, was driving a 2025 Freightliner towing a 2019 Great Dane semi-trailer. He was traveling northwest on U.S. Highway 287, and the preliminary accident report states Singh failed to maintain a single lane and drifted of the road to the right.
The truck went up an embankment and struck a railroad car on the railroad track. The vehicle then rolled onto its left side and came to rest. The driver was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Commissioner’s court meets on Feb. 9

Members of the Montague County Commissioner’s Court will meet at 9 a.m. on Feb. 9.
An executive session is scheduled to discussion personnel matters pertaining to the current county employee assigned to the septic system inspections and the proposed transfer to the new sewer plant facility, as well as the county employee assigned to the Montague County Animal Shelter. Any action will be taken back in open session.
The court will consider approving a memorandum of understanding between the county and Montague County Animal Rescue. The rescue group has been working with the county to get operations at the animal shelter up and running, along with providing volunteers at the shelter.
Other topics on the agenda include: Approve the 2026 Nationwide 457(b) deferred compensation plan; approve the 2026 Texas Association o Counties ARTS Renewal agreement; and consider the risk management pool liability proposal including $1,000,000 for cybersecurity coverage; amend authorized representatives for TexPool adding Charles Lanier; approve order of election for the 2026 joint primary; consider quotes to replace seven showers and 11 exhaust fans in the jail and consider replat of two lots in Silver lakes Ranch phase seven in precinct two.
