Nocona
The Nocona Lady Indians went 1-1 in their first round of district play last week.
The Lady Indians won a competitive game at Era 5-2, but then fell to Muenster by run-rule 15-0 after four innings.
Nocona came in with a big winning streak, but most of the wins were against familiar teams and the Lady Indians knew they would have to play at their best in a district that is expected to be tough.
The Lady Indians played at Era on March 18. The Lady Hornets took the early lead 1-0 in the first inning. Nocona tied the game at 1-1 in the third inning when Kaitlyn Tiffner scored on the base paths thanks to an error.
Era got the lead back with one run in the fourth inning , but then the Lady Indians got their first lead in the fifth inning. Ma’leigha Franklin drove in two runs on a sacrifice fly ball to put Nocona up 3-2.
The Lady Indians got some insurance in the sixth inning when Tinley Cable hit a two-run inside the park home run.
Nocona held on to win 5-2. Kylea Wallace led the team two hits as the team only had six all game. The hits were extremely opportunistic for the Lady Indians to score as much as they did.
Reagan Phipps allowed only two runs on seven hits while striking out 12 batters and walking three. The defense committed only one fielding error behind her.
Nocona was happy to get the close win to start district, but then came a big dose of bummer that threw sand in the potato salad of last week.
It was the Lady Indians home district opener, but Muenster had a huge second inning scoring 11 runs and it was all over from there. Nocona only got one hit from Phipps on offense as the Lady Indians lost 15-0 after four innings.
Saint Jo
The Saint Jo Lady Panthers were able to pick up a win against 1A Bryson last week, but fell to Graford and Perrin-Whitt later.
The Lady Panthers beat the Cowgirls 19-4, but then fell to 2A Graford 18-6 and fellow 1A team Perrin-Whitt 23-13.
Saint Jo played Bryson at home on March 18 and dominated, getting the win in three innings by run-rule 19-4.
Symbri Evans led the team with three RBIs while Kamron Skidmore and Mercedes Diaz each drove in two runs each. The team drew 15 walks and were hit by seven pitches.
So all three hits were big deals, like Skidmore hitting a home run.
Maxey Johnson allowed four runs (three earned) on two hits while striking out four batters. The defense committed only two fielding errors.
The next two games saw Saint Jo walk too many batters to keep the games close. Against Graford the team walked 15 batters and against Perrin-Whitt it was 16 batters.

Saint Jo hosted its own volleyball tournament Sept. 10-12.
In its first match, the Lady Panthers bested Sam Rayburn in a b est-of-three match 2-1 (25-11, 23-25, 25-14.) In the opener, senior Tatum Morman staked the Lady Panthers to a 4-0 lead with help from Kamron Skidmore and Olivia Johnson kills. The Lady Rebels would come back and tie the game at seven.
Savannah Hill’s kill broke serve and allowed Abby Carter to string together seven points. An ace and a Hill kill helped keep the drive alive. Hill later rolled off six points in a row, helped by two aces, to go up 23-10. Sam Rayburn broke serve but Saint Jo finished the game with a single Morman point.
Sam Rayburn came right out of the gate firing in the second game leading 4-0. A single Carter point, thrown down by a Hill block, and Hill’s four-point skein put the Lady Panthers up 8-6. Sam Rayburn tied the game at eight.

Forestburg’s volleyball team gave visiting Chico a solid test Sept. 8, but the Lady Dragons rebounded from a third-set loss to pull out the 3-1 win (25-23, 25-19, 25-27, 25-19).
The Lady Longhorns got out to a quick start with aces from freshmen Madi Wadsworth and Lacie Shotwell staking the squad to a 4-1 lead in game one. Wadsworth later broke a 4-all tie with a kill.
Addy Conway rolled off four straight points, helped by a Wadsworth kill to give Forestburg an 11-9 lead. Chico took a 16-14 lead but a Brenna Briles ace and Jocelyn Rich’s two points forced Chico into a timeout down 17-19.
The respite worked as it would be Forestburg’s last lead of game one, the Lady ‘Horns not having another serving point.

After splitting the first two games with Vernon Northside, Bowie’s volleyball team turned things out and wound with a 3-1 match win (25-17, 15-25, 25-17, 25-17).
Molly Enlow used two aces amidst a four-point string to give the Lady Rabbits a 5-1 lead in game one. Senior KP Rutherford’s pair of points extended the lead to 8-3.
Northside cut the deficit to 10-11 before Rutherford’s kill broke serve.
Bella Culwell’s point, aided by an Ellie Mowery kill, put Bowie up 13-10. Northside tied the game at 13 before Rutherford came through with another pair for a 17-14 lead. Lillie Maddox also had a deuce for a 20-15 lead and force a Lady INdian timeout.
Northside broke serve but a Sophie Maddox block and Lillie Maddox three-point string gave the squad game point at 24-16. The squads exchanged side outs to end the game.
